is a desktop plugin and mobile keyboard
that enables working professionals to become more emotionally intelligent communicators on digital messaging platforms
by offering them alternative suggestions and feedback to reduce ambiguity of intent and tone in messages.
This project is a result of Hack Mental Health #reverse hackathon that we participated in and won the Audience Choice Award and overall First place for designing digital tools to enable emotionally conscious digital communications. There were 250+ participants and 35+ Teams that participated in this event. As it was a one-day event I along with my team-mate Kritika developed it further into a complete product taking care of all the use-case's and backing it user research.
Tools: Sketch, Adobe Illustrator & Photoshop, Keynote, Principle

We started by looking at existing information and resources online for inspiration to get started and found some alarming stats. We conducted interviews with 10+ professionals to understand their email writing experiences, focusing on their modes of communication, their habits & pain-points.
Apart from the direct user research, I participated in multiple whiteboard discussions with my teammate to identify target domains, reframe the problem and study the overall system of computer-mediated communications. This lead to multiple system maps which helped us pick 3 actionable insights and fix main experience principles.
We synthesized this data to find the ideal user and created a user archetype and outlined a journey map, which helped guide our ideation process. We further sketched, storyboarded then narrowed down our scope using our established key opportunity areas.
Identifying the Ideal User
Working professional whose scope of work involves
significant written digital communication.
Understanding the System
Extensive research helped us understand the system better and we came up with a
- Feedback Loop Diagram & a Model of Communication to identify the possible areas of intervention.
How might we ...
minimize unintentional negative digital communication and
encourage emotionally intelligent communication at work?
Why focus only on work related communication and not personal communication?
A common tool or platform cannot work on both these settings. Through our secondary and primary research we discovered that when engaging in personal conversations, people develop their own rules and thresholds of conduct based on their relationships and proximity with their community. These rules are unique to individuals, cultures and groups where universal rules of communication can’t be applied. Also, people don’t want intrusion in their personal lives. E.g. sharing personal jokes between friends, flirty messages between partners, etc.
Why Universal And Not Culture Specific Communication Principles?
With the advent of globalization, most organizations today need to adhere to universal principles of communication that surpass cultural idiosyncrasies that-
• enable all employees in an organization to be on the same page
• effective communication with stakeholders across the world.
Depending the situation and time at hand user can either :
1. tap on the highlights and correct their writing
2. Or tap on the plugin icon to see detailed suggestions
Emotion.ally plugin works through a structure of 3 tabs:
1. Analysis Tab - Shows a quick emotional analysis of the email in terms of the tone, content and word choices.
2. Writing Suggestions Tab - Gives writing suggestions/templates to respond to the email in an emotionally intelligent way.
3. My Profile Tab – This section shows the user their progress over time making them more emotionally conscious over time.
1. Text Analysis
The message gets analyzed real-time as it's typed or received. The system suggests alternatives by highlighting the text and shows detailed analysis by tapping on the plugin icon.
2. Easy to switch Tabs
The system works through a structure of three tabs- 1. Message Analysis, 2. Writing-Suggestions, and 3. My Profile. By tapping the respective icons on the side panel, information regarding each section highlighted instantly.
3. Detailed View
Tapping on the 'Know More' button for any suggestion opens a new window- highlighting the error and shows alternatives & reasoning for the suggestion in detail. Users can also write the messages on this window to avoid any mistakes on the main screen.

Ecosystem of Products
Professional communications are not just limited to desktop and computer monitors. The solution will exist in the entire ecosystem through internal chat messengers like Slack via a plugin, as well as on mobile phones through emotion.ally keyboard.
Digital communication is often rushed and we don’t get the benefit of context, the tone of voice, and body language. There’s much more ambiguity in the way we communicate digitally and, at the same time, a lot less accountability. Having been in the same boat, I know that miscommunication can cause a lot of unnecessary stress and anxiety as well as decreased productivity and an unwillingness to collaborate. Through this project, I become more exposed to social, moral and cultural issues that design can address.
Today designers need to be mindful of their responsibility more than ever to create positive social change.
Another skill that I picked up and enjoyed doing in this project was whiteboarding.
Whiteboarding as a process gives as you the opportunity to visualize your solutions without becoming tangled along the way. It helps you tell your stories better. Bringing you into the heart of the problem and solution.
